Reducing light pollution to protect wildlife, science, and the night sky.
Artificial light pollution in Miami is an escalating environmental and scientific issue. Excessive and misdirected nighttime lighting disrupts ecosystems, endangers wildlife, wastes energy, and prevents meaningful astronomical research. Coastal development, street lighting, and illuminated buildings contribute to severe skyglow across the city.
In the United States, over 99% of the population lives under skies altered by artificial light, and globally, more than 80% of people can no longer see a truly dark night sky. Miami is among the most light-polluted coastal regions, placing sensitive wildlife and scientific observation at risk.
Lights Out Miami is a student-led initiative working to reduce unnecessary artificial lighting through education, community action, and advocacy for sustainable, wildlife-safe lighting.
